Skiers compensated

Claire Acton-Adams and Jeremy Light (both Canterbury) were both compensated for their misfortunes during the F.LS, series at Mount Hutt when they were presented with handsome awards for “the unluckiest New Zealand skiers” at the closing function.

Miss Acton-Adams broke a bone in her wrist during a timed downhill training run on Tuesday. Light, a member of the national squad, failed to complete the slalom and on successive days in different events happened to be the runner on the course when the electronic timing gear malfunctioned. No such prize went to the enthusiastic young Frenchman, Luc Morisset, who failed to complete the second run of the giant slalom in flat light on Sunday and

then needed a new set of equipment after the heel of his boot came off and his ski bent in Wednesday’s downhill race. At least he did have the satisfaction of getting fifth place in the slalom after a particularly good second run.

Yesterday several ski-ing officials stayed on at Mount Hutt as a number of the top racers had requested another day of downhill training on the prepared course.

Several of the international stars at Mount Hutt, including the talented French team, are about to have a short "vacation” in Queenstown and will then travel back, via the West Coast, for a few more days training at Mount Hutt. Most will be competing in the F.I.S. series in Australia, which starts on August 7.
