Abortion unit sought

PA Wellington The Wellington Hospital Board has decided to make an urgent application to the Health Department for special funds to establish a separate abortion unit. The move, agreed to at the board’s monthly meeting last evening without discussion was recommended by its policy and finance committee, which discussed the matter in

private earlier this month. Other recommendations accepted were that Wellington and Hutt hospitals continue to provide abortion services, and that day surgical facilities be established at Kenepuru Hospital. Porirua, as soon as possible. A board member, Mr A. Carman, said he believed the Porirua facilities would be available for abortions as well as general surgery.
