Trawler a write-off
PA Tauranga The Tauranga trawler; (John Dory, which grounded ion Whale Island, off WhakaItane, on Wednesday’, is a (total loss and no attempt (will be made to salvage it. An Auckland marine surveyor and salvage expert, Captain G. W. Dunsford, said yesterday he had inspected the stranded trawler. “It would be too expensive to salvage it and the cost of repairs would far exceed its insured value.” he said. “One side of the vessel has been completely battered in by the heavy seas and each day sees more damage from being pounded on the rocks.” Captain Dunsford said it was not worth the cost to the John Dory’s “owners, Sanford, Ltd, to attempt to salvage any of the boat’s equipment. Sanford, Ltd, will call for tenders for the boat's disposal as is, where is. The 15.8 m trawler grounded in heavy seas on Wednesday morning. The crew were rescued unharmed.
