Sailing ships

Sir, — While sailing ships could certainly help future energy conservation, the article (“The Press,” July 13) has prompted this reply. The rig shown is of a fivemasted barque and is identical with that of the France, the biggest sailing ship to date, of 5633 tons. To expect

a ship of 12,000 tons to do about 15 knots with the same rig is asking a lot. The France may have done this speed at odd times but her average would be good at 10 knots. As regards the ship being four times the size of the Cutty Sark, the proposed 12,000 tonner would be much more as the Cutty Sark’s gross tonnage was 963. Instead of being four times as big she would be more than 12 times as big. Another point not mentioned is insurance; the rates are extremely high. I am all in favour of the idea and only write to give the true perspective. — Yours, etc., W. H. BROWNE. July 13, 1978.
