Cleaning gutters

Sir, — As I sit here looking out of my window watching water from blocked gutters creeping across the road, possibly to meet its own level, I wonder what happened to those friendly men who used to keep our gutters clean. There is no excuse at this time when unemployment figures are so high and when Christchurch is reported as having the highest number. Men should not be expected to get out in flood conditions to clear away the debris: the channels and gutters should be cleaned as far as possible before the situation arises. Gutter sweeping may be considered a lowly position by some, but to me it is just as important as the man at the top. It is a vital link in our chain of living. — Yours, etc., E. R. WALTERS. July 9, 1978. [The Riccarton Town Clerk (Mr T. N. Neate) replied: “We are having extreme difficulty in getting people to do this sort of work. Formerly rather elderly people did it but they have gradually retired and we have not been able to replace them.”]
