MPs may get pay rise
PA Wellington Members of Parliament could receive pay increases next month. The Higher Salaries Commission is considering salary increases for members and top Government officials as part of a salary review. The salary review for i members is the first since ! April, 1976, although they have received small cost-of-living orders since then. A newspaper report yesterday said the increases could run from 3 per cent to 7 per cent. The executive officer of ■ the commission (Mr E. Hardy-Jones) would not comment on those predictions yesterday except to , confirm that the salaries . were under review. The increases could lift the income of an ordinary member to just over $3OO a week. At present members get ] a salary of $15,175 a year. ] Mr Hardy-Jones said the I decision on the pay should come by the end of the month. Under the Salaries Commission Act passed last year the decision must be given to the Speaker, the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.
