Say farewell to old No. 6
If you ride your horse too close to a tram car in the Borough of Riccarton, do not worry; the council has repealed its bylaw prohibiting such actions At its recent council meeting. Riccarton decided to drop its by-law No. 6 v. hich had been confirmed by the council on June 11, 1923. It was generally agreed
that there was little point keeping No. 6 on the books as the trams, and the horses had been long gone. The by-law. signed by the then Mayor (Mr A. D. tordi and the Town Clerk < Mr A. Ijiwrence Gee) had h een the topic of a special meeting r»f the Corporation of the Borough of Riccartotr on tfiiv 14, 1923, It specifically prohibited the folic wing dangerous acts: “Ufliiisji any tram car or tramway trailer shall be
taking up or putting down passengers, or about.to be stopped for such purpose, no person shall at any time drive or propel any vehicle or ride any horse between such tram car or tramway trailer and the kerbing of the footpath on the side of which such tram car or tramway trailer shall be taking up or putting down, or shall be about to take up or put down, passengers unless there shall be at least 23 feet of clear road space between such vehicle
or horse and such tram car on tramway trailer.” The by-law was ordained on behalf of the mayor, ouncillors, and burgesses. The by-law repealed at he same meeting at which >ther borough by-laws vere reworded to conform >vith metric measurements. Presumably, old No. 6 was retired because it was out of date and not because it would have to have been changed to 7.0104 m of clearance instead of 23ft.
