Human development courses
Sir, — P. Clements (June 30) calls himself a “concerned parent,” but his views are very narrow. Today, drug abuse, violent
crime, sex abuse, etc., are rampant and what is the answer? Nobody knows. The Johnson Report has taken the ills of our society and proffered suggestions as to ways of solving these problems. No doubt Mr Clements thinks it is the right and duty of parents to guide and direct their children in these matters and I agree with him. But facts prove that this is not being done, so surely it is better that guidance be given through the schools? Most of our teachers are hard-working, responsible citizens, genuinely concerned for their pupils and they would be willing to incorporate these matters in the lessons. Mr Clements’s totally negative attitude denies help to all those thousands of children who desperately need it. — Yours, etc.,
J. MILLER (Mrs). July 2, 1978.
