Union ballots
Sir, — In reply to your editorial on union ballots, it is a totally different perspective sitting in a cosy ivory tower writing nicesounding phrases about contented union members to being a worker on a factory floor where democratic principles may not appear so obvious. Having spent seven years in the New Zealand Navy marred only by a minority of petty, arrogant men in authority, it came as a shock to find similar people in civilian life. First, I found them in Government departments, which is bearable, but I also found them among union officials. Their attitudes had a profound effect on me, so I quickly became a charge hand and finally a manager to neutralise their role in my life. At present I see no reason to alter my opinion of the compulsory union system. It will always throw up the wrong sort of person in its operation. — Yours, etc., D. JOHNSTON. June 30, 1978.
