The price of a nip

Sir, — I read that the price of a nip of imported whisky has been increased by 1c by edict of the Department of Trade and Industry. I wonder what complex machinery was put into action to come to this momenta's decision? Surely the resources of a department would be better utilised to ensure that there is no "e-flxing between distributors and retailers, rather than worrying about the actual price. The retailer could then charge whatever he liked, and. the consumer could use his God-given right to pay the price, or not. The efficient retailer who worked a little harder and charged a little less would attract the business. A 'd I am quite sure that the price would be considerably less than 38c a nip. Price vcr.trols although often necessai,, inevitably allow the inefficient to stay in business. And sometimes allow for a more than honest profit and a less than super-* lative product. — Yours, ALAN FALLOON. July 4, 1978.
