Sunday ice-skating
Sir, — The Heathcote County Council has much to answer for in prohibiting Sunday afternoon skating at the Centaurus Ice Rink. It is extraordinary that in a city the size of Christchurch, which has marvellous civic outdoor facilities, the city and local councils provide no active indoor amenities for young people in numbers other than two indoor swimming pools (not many wish to swim in winter) and Cowles Stadium. We have a teen-age problem, and now we have a local council actually preventing 350 youngsters enjoying the sport of ice-skating on Sunday afternoons. In modern cities the alternative to boredom is often vandalism and other anti-social behaviour and the sooner the city and local councils realise their responsibility in this matter and do something constructive about it, as they do in other countries, the better. — Yours, etc., ROSEMARY GREENE.
