Constable on secrecy charge
PA Wellington A police constable has been charged under police regulations with disclosing secret information obtained from the Wanganui Computer Centre. The Police Commissioner (Mr R. J. Walton) said yesterday that the officer would be dealt with in an internal police inquiry soon. The case first arose when the Chief Ombudsman (Mr George Laking) said in his annual report that he had reason to believe there had been an unauthorised leakage of information from the centre. The police declined to identify the constable, or to sav where he was stationed. If the alleged offence occurred now, the constable would be subject to a criminal charge and liable to a two-year jail term if found guilty. But Mr Walton said the incident had occurred before the 1977 amendment to the Wanganui Computer Centre Act came into force on December 16, 1977. This created a new offence of unauthorised disclosure of information from the centre.
A police spokesman said yesterday that under police regulations, if the charge were found proved, the constable could be fined, have his pay reduced, be demoted, admonished, or dismissed from the force..
