Postal ballot to proceed

PA Auckland A postal ballot on compulsory or voluntary unionism for clerical workers in the freezing industry is proceeding, in spite of a Federation of Labour protest about the ballot’s being a farce. The president of the Federation of Labour (Sir Thomas Skinner) said yesterday that the F.O.L. challenged the ballot because of errors in the distribution of voting papers.

Some members had received two voting papers, said Sir Thomas, and others had not received any. However, the Registrar of Industrial Unions (Mr R. A. Quay) said from Wellington that the Labour department had no intention of stopping the ballot. The Department mailed voting papers according to a list of members supplied by the secretary of the Freezing Industry Clerical Officers’ Union (Mr E. Duncan), endorsed by Mr Duncan as a ■“certified list of the union membership.”
