Mercy flight by night
PA Wellington A jet helicopter made a rare night-time ‘ emergency flight from Wellington to Westport and return on Saturday, to bring a critically ill male patient from Buller Hospital for emergency surgery.
The helicopter pilot, accompanied by a surgeon from Wellington Hospital, left about 10.45 p.m., and landed on school grounds opposite the Buller Hospital with the aid of car lights. Special fuel for the JetRanger helicopter had to be brought by road from Greymouth because the return flight to Wellington was be* yond the helicopter’s range. The helicopter arrived back in the grounds of Wellington Hospital at 1.30 a.m. It is believed that the patient was operated on but died afterwards.
