Jail term for theft of books

PA Wellington A man who stole $60,000 worth of books from the General Assembly Library was jailed for six months when sentenced in the Magistrate’s Court at Wellington

He is David Graham Los, aged 26, who had earlier pleaded guilty to stealing the books, the property of the National Library of New Zealand, between May and November, 1974. At the time of the theft, Los worked part-time in the library.

The Court was told that in May, 1974, the defendant began taking books, magazines, and papers from the library and by November that year had amassed about $60,000 worth. Covers with stamps and identifying marks were removed and buried in a local tip. Senior-Sergeant P. F. Darrock, in the police statement of facts said that Los had written to a friend in London this year and had told him he could send 22 books. The friend wrote back assuring Los they would have a value of about $28,000. Los air-freighted the books to London where they were recovered by the British police.
