“Homosexual” or “Gay”
Sir, — I notice recently, in two articles at least on gay people “The Press” has used quotation marks around the word “gay.” I presume this is because you feel it is
not, as yet, standard usage. But this seems unduly cautious. Generally people know that gay can mean homosexual. And, more important, gay has plenty of warm, friendly connotations; “homosexual” is loaded with bigoted distaste and condemnation. Surely you prefer the former? — Yours,
