Drinking drivers
Sir, — The recent announcement of a proposed blitz on drinking drivers has, predic ably, raised few eyebrows. The Treasury coffers will benefit, a few people unknown tc us will be killed or disabled, and, after the blitz, the “all clear.” Between now and then, however, the e will be thousands of private parties at which car drivers will get “sloshed.” Kiwi party hosts could well emulate the example set by their West German counterparts. Over there, hosts ensure that, for each car-load of guests, one person is deputed to drive after the party, and he drinks nothing but soft drinks. Of course, in West Germany, if a drunken driver is involved in an accident after a private party, the host also is indicted as having supplied liquor. An affront to civil liberty? Tell that to the victims of drunken driving and the bereaved families. — Yours, etc., HARVEY FOSS. June 23, 1978.
