Horse trials
Sir, — TVl’s reply to D. R. Fisher (June 17) could be interpreted to mean that the organisers of the Nevz Zealand Horse Trials Championships did little to seek television coverage. I would like to make it clear that the New Zealand Horse Society’s publicity officers, local and national, made several approaches to both channels (and all the media) well bef- re the event. The television news and sports sections chose to all but ignore the competition. In spite of our representations TV2 even saw fit to present a European equivalent of the New Zealand championship on the same day as the main section of the event at Riccarton. This was at a time when those who were integrally involved, were actively engaged as competitors, administrators or spectators. I have been appalled by the insensitivity and arrogance of television
producers who prefer to report brutality, violence and scandal, surmising the viewing public should find it best consumption. — Yours, etc., R. R. BAIN. chairman, N.Z. Horse Society, Canterbury area. June 21, 1978.
