Commission for the Environment

Sir, — The “new role” for the Commission for the Environment (“The Press,” June 23) is little more than an emasculation. This body was set up to subject development projects to a thorough analysis of their environmental impact. But the commission has never been given the authority to have much effect. Big Government projects such as the Clutha power scheme are being approved before an environmental impact report has been prepared or acted upon. Some Government departments have begun their own system in opposition to the commission, asking for submissions and then acting as their own judge and jury in assessing them. The Forest Service has done this with the logging at Pureora. If the National Government is sincere in wanting to protect the environment it should strengthen the Commission for the Environment, not weaken it. — Yours, etc., A. J. CRAIG. June 24, 1978.
