Big drop in trade imbalance
(PA Wellington Imports exceeded exports :by SIO.BM in May, according! to preliminary figures from the Government Statistician' (Mr E. A. Harris). Imports were $259.5M and exports $248.7M. ! Last May exports were $307.7M and imports! $303.4M. For the II months to May! 31, this year, imports exceeded exports by SI6M compared with $243M for the corresponding period last year. This was an “enormous reduction” said the Minister of Trade and Industry (Mr Adams-Schneider) commenting on the trade figures. “In fact the excess for the year to date, of just over ’ SI6M, is less than the average figure for each month of last year which was over S2OM,” he said. “It is good to see that the 11-month totals for 1978 consist of higher exports, $2930M compared with $2870M in 1977 and lower imports. $2946M agate st $3135M,” Mr Adams-! i! Schneider said.
