PA Rotorua. One in three members of New Zealand’s 226 credit unions have credit union loans. This figure has been given by the managing I director of the New Zea- ! land Credit Union League ' (Mr C. Smith). He was speaking at the ! ninth annual general meeting of the Rotorua Group Hospital Staff Credit ! Union. I Statistics showed that affiliated credit unions i throughout New Zealand had a total membership of 78,875 and 26,635 members with loans. But with many members having their spouses and families as members, Mr Smith estimated that more than half ‘of the households in credit unions had credit union loans. He. said credit unions : were born in times of ad- ! versity to provide people [ with a source of credit on [ a low-cost, non-profit basis. I They protected, the ! dignity of the person and I avoided the need for ordi- [ nary people to have to go I on their knees and beg for ! help, he said.
