Match race for Canterbury colts?

Special correspondent I Auckland’: i The New Zealand Juvenile) Championship at Alexandra Park tomorriAV night looks, like being a match race be-j tween the outstanding! Canterbury colts, Genesis ! from Christchurch, and Trio.! from Rangiora. Only the bonny Auckland; filly, Dawn Mist, is given! any real chance of beating them. Before they clashed on the first night of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting last Monday, Trio and Genesis had last-start wins to their credit — Trio in the Thames Juvenile Stakes and Genesis in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes. On Monday when he rounded the home turn six lengths in front, Trio looked certain to score, but Genesis came with a brilliant burst and won going away by a little over a length. It seems pretty sure that! Genesis will be the favourite 1

for the championship on the: [strength of that run but Trio! might still be a tough propo-| sition. Trio appeared to be driven! a little impatiently on the first night, being hurried ■along to a big lead well before the home turn. It was | hardly surprising that he was shortening stride 100 m from the finish. ! Dawn Mist went three seconds slower than Genesis when she won the fillies race on Monday. But she would have gone faster if she had had any opposition in the straight. She is an uncommonlygood young stayer, having won twice at 2200 m and once at 2000 m and if she can be driven in behind she could worry the colts. Del’s Trophy might still be a chance in spite of running a distant third to Genesis and Trio on the opening night. He was far from happy tn the slushy going. : Del’s Trophy has won 'eight races this season —

| the most of any two-year-old in the country — iiiid he will be expected to race 'prominently if the track is fast. Blue Chip and Tempest Belle, b<nh of which have been consistent, will add interest to what promises to be the highlight of the winter trotting scene in rhe north. Canterbury pacers are also likely to dominate the betting on the second leg of the 1T.A.8. double, the Double Cash Handicap. Jascoe and Ice Wise were second and third to Myron in the corresponding race on : the first night. With Myron 1 out of the way. they look to ' have excellent prospects of i filling the major placings. Ice Wise is preferred beI cause he has a start of 10m • from Jascoe. They met on ■ level terms last week. Ice ; Wise is usually a fast begini ner from a stand. From No. 2 on the front mark, he f should be prominent from • the outset.
