Education system
Sir, — So “Back to the Basics” is to become an election issue. Both Mr Muldoon and Mr Rowling have jumped on this convenient and cheap bandwagon as a means of winning votes in November. They ignore the suggestions of teachers whose concern it is to improve the basic standards of education, because these suggestions will cost money. A lower teacher-pupil ratio at all levels must be the first step on the road to improving the present situation. All teachers are faced with the problems of increasing numbers of disturbed and deprived children who need far more attention than they receive in today’s overcrowded classrooms. The second step must be improved salaries and conditions to make the profession attractive, and to attract those already in it. These are the pleas teachers have been making for years. What a pity they are not cheap. At least they are not hollow,! — Yours, etc., NEIL G. LANCASTER. June 19, 1978. I
