Anniversary celebrated
The recent annual meeting of the Lake Ma Winter Sports Association was also the occasion for a celebration — the thirtieth anniversary of the building of a 4km access road to Lake Ida. In the first two skating seasons after World War 11, skaters had to walk almost 4km from Harper Road around the base of Little Mount Ida to the lake. The track was frozen and slippery in the morning, muddy and slippery on the return journey in the afternoons. A small group of enthusiasts, headed by the late Tom Stone, the late Sam Moore and including Eddie Edwards, Pat Bayley, Bert Lyttle and the late Mawson Stewart, decided to raise finance and build an access road to Lake Ida and car parks at the site. The opening of the road was celebrated on Anzac week-end, 1948. One of the original group behind the idea, Mr Lyttle, has retained his deep interest in
the development at the lake. He and his family are hardy regulars and workers at the lake during the winter season, and Mr Lyttle has served as president of the Lake Ida Winter Sports Association for many years. Last season will be remembered as one of the worst outdoor skating seasons since 1948. Of the eight week-ends, only nine days skating were possible. Naturally, the poor skating season was reflected in the finances of the association. There was a deficit of more than $3OOO, attributable almost entirely to the loss of revenue from gate receipts and road tolls. Officers elected at the annual meeting were: Patron, Mr C. W. Reid; president, Mr A. E. Lyttle; vice-president, Mr. K. W. C. Nicolle; secretary, Mrs F. W. Everest; committee, Messrs D. J Lyttle, A. G. Elliott, M. C. Day, B. C. Everest, A. Ross and Mrs J. W. Lyttle.
