Secret ballot for abortion decision

PA Wellington. The National Party conference will decide by secret ballot whether to debate the call for repeal of the Contraception, Sterilisation and Abortion Act. The President of the National Party (Mr G. A. Chapman) said that its Dominion executive had decided to place both the Auckland and CanterburyWestland division remits, which call for repeal of the law, on the order paper, but to give the conference itself the opportunity to decide whether it wished to debate the remits or any part of the remits. “As this is a conscience matter, all voting on this issue, both on whether the remits are to be debated and the remits themselves, will be by secret ballot,” Mr Chapman said.
