Kept N.Z. flag flying
Stan Mellor is one of the English jumping trainers looking to New Zealand for his long-term prospects. New Zealand-breds accounted for 10 of the first 27 victories in the last National Hunt season. Writing in “Stud and Stable”, Peter Jones commented: “Like the Irish, the New Zealanders keep the best at home, so with the exception of Grand Canyon we have not seen any world beaters, but as the traffic increases so dies the likelihood of a New Zealandbred Gold Cup winner within the next 10 years.”
