Nurses’ pay claims
Claims by mental health nurses for a salry increase were a lot closer to settlement as a result of negotiations held yesterday with the Minister of State Services (Mr Gordon), said a regional nurses’ representative (Mr C. Bell), yesterday. Mr Bell, .who returned from Wellington last evening where he and other representatives had been involved in the negotiations, said that the gap had been narrowed between both sides.
The meeting yesterday was between representatives of mental health nurses, the Public Service Association, the Minister of State Sendees and the Minister of Health (Mr Gill). “We were given opportunities to discuss the anomalies in the package deal offered to us by the Government.” Mr Bell said. These included certain gradings and seniority margins that the employers wanted to eliminate. Mr Bell said as a result of the progress made during yesterday’s negotiations, the mental health nurses would be calling off the industrial action planned for June 21. The results of the negotiations would be studied by a Cabinet sub-committee and any possible agreement would be known this afternoon, he said.
