Tennis win in U.K. for Fairlie

Brian Fairlie was the only New Zealander to win on the first day of the John Player international tennis tournament in Birmingham yesterday. He beat Van Winitsky (U.S.), 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Fellow New Zealander Chris Lewis lost to Fairlie’s regular doubles partner, Ismail el Shafei (Egypt), 4-6. 8-9, and Russell Simpson! (N.Z.) lost to Rohun Beven (Britain), 7-9, 8-9.
Top players who had wins included Jimmy Connors (U.S.), John Alexander (Aust.), Roscoe Tanner (U.S.) and Raul Ramirez (Mexico).
