“Praise for bikies”
Sir, —I certainly do not justify the violence often associated with bikie gangs, but feel very irritated when your correspondent, N. Gray (June 7) is unable to tolerate an article of praise for the bikies. Generally news articles emphasise the socially unacceptable behaviour of motor-cyclists.
Usually members of bikie groups are anti society and are very likely to be on the wrong side of the law. It is ridiculous to compare a group such as the 23rd Battalion with a bikie group. The Army and the police force uphold the laws of a society to which they conform. Personally, I appreciated the article which showed that bikies can show genuine compassion for a friend — certainly praiseworthy. Members of the public need to see the bikies not only as rebels but as human beings.—Yours, etc., LESLEY LEARMONTH. June 8, 1978.
