Restoring the railways

Sir, —S. B. Barltrop recalls past successes of the New Zealand Railways (“The Press,” June 8) and seems just to ask for another Gordon Coates to restore confidence in the railway system. But to do as he asks means that we should have to plan to make New Zealand self reliant once again, for that was the characteristic to the fore when the gold dredges were constructed. After World War 11, like most of the Western world, we opted for the luxury of the private motor-car and higher import of trivialities. We refused to accept that oil supplies could not continue to flow at such a high rate and we put a major part of our resources behind the motor-car and the railways were downgraded. Now is the time to start restoring the railway system to its former importance.—Yours, etc.,

PATRICK NEARY. June 8, 1978.
