‘Basic course in waiting’

Someone with a dry sense of humour was responsible for naming the courses for the unemployed being held at the Christchurch Technical Institute. The courses are designed to help people, who are on the unemployed register, find jobs in specific areas. A course to start next month has been described as a “basic course in waiting.” It is designed for waiters and waitresses. Four courses are in progress, these being inspected yesterday by the Canterbury Employment Advisoiy Committee. The committee is shown, at left, looking over the introductory course on he apparel industry. The committee was satisfied with the way the courses were progressing, said the chairman (Mr M. B. Hayes). The prospects of employment for most of the students were “reasonably good,” he said. Students taking part in the child-care training course would have no problem at all in finding jobs, said Mr Hayes. However, the committee realised that the apparel industry was not in good shape at the moment, and it was not known how students from this course would fare. Mr Hayes said there was a high turnover of staff in the clothing industry, and he hoped that students would stand a better chance of employment with the course behind them.
