'Selective logging’ on W. Coast
! Greymouth reporter I The phasing out of logIging of native forests, anjnounced as Labour Party j policy recently by its spokesman on the environment, Mr R. W. Prebble, member of Parliament, referred to the North Island only, said Labour’s candidate for the West Coast (Mr T. K. Burke) yesterday. Mr Burke spoke to twa groups of timber industry workers at Gladstone on
(Tuesday and gave this assurance. Mr Burke said that from discussions he had had with Mr Prebble, and with Mr J. Ridley, the Labour candidate for Taupo, he could assure West Coast timber workers that both men were aware of the obvious differences between circumstances and conditions in the North Island and on the West Coast. “Labour’s policy will take full account of the needs of
the West Coast community,” said Mr Burke. “At the Labour Party’s recent conference, Mr Prebble accepted an amendment asking for logging on a selective, longterm renewal basis on the West Coast, and I have invited him here to see the situation at first hand. “Mr Rowling made it clear in Hokitika last year that the welfare of the people is Labour’s prime consid-I eration," Mr Burke said.
