Eyre not interested in Progress League

The Eyre County Council is not interested in joining the Canterbury Progress League. A letter, urging the council to reconsider its earlier decision to cease membership of the League, was received by the council. Mr T. M. Inch, chairman of the league, said the council’s decision to end its membership was received with regret. He said Mr Angus MacKenzie was no longer director of the league, and a complete reorganisation of the league was under way. He offered to meet the council to answer any questions. Mr S. J. Cowens, the county chairman, said there had been some talk that the Public Relations Office might be taken over by the Christchurch City Council. However, he expressed concern that the office would still become a political affair. He suggested that the Public Relations Office would form a useful role by ’promoting the South Island : through the various bodies. ! Cr K. J. Francis said that 'people should be trying to i promote the South Island, not just Canterbury. To be parochial was a waste of time. Cr W. Norris said it was “a waste of time and money” and moved that the council receive the letter. The motion was passed unanimously.
