Teachers’ salary claims
Sir, — Of course smaller classes are highly desirable i secondary schools, but it would be easier to start with primary schools, where there is a teacher surplus. It would also be more effective in reducing the high proportion of secondary pupils who cannot cope with secondary schooling through lack of basic skills, etc. These non-coping pupils, labelled “reluctant” learners, create the classroom strain which is the real problem behind the loss of secondary teachers. Better job satisfaction, not higher salaries, will hold and attract the types of people who should be teachers. — Yours, etc., (Mrs) M. E. RITCHIE. June 8, 1978.
