Crash in pass
The police have not yet released the name of a Christchurch man who was killed on the Lewis Pass highway on Friday night. The man, aged 55, died instantly when his car was in collision with a car being towed by a towtruck about 45km west of Hanmer Springs, The police are still trying to trace close relatives of the dead man who are in Australia.
The man was a passenger in the car. The other occupants, a Christchurch family of three, suffered only minor injuries. The car was in collision with the towed car, and then ran off the road into a tree. The vehicles were all travelling west. The crash was the third fatal accident in Canterbury in three days. A motor-cyclist was killed when his machine and a car collided in Lincoln Road on Wednesday evening, and a man died when a car left the Main South Road at Islington on Thursday. A young survivor of the Main South Road accident is still in the intensivecare unit at Christchurch Hospital. He is Mana Kereamana, aged 20, of 31 Winton Street, St Albans, who was reported in a serious condition last evening.
