Golf Jerry Heard birdied the final hole for a two-shot victory in the SUS2OO,OOO Atlanta golf classic, his first triumph since the spring of 1974. Heard finished with a 19-under-par 269, and beat Bob Murphy, Tom Watson and Lou Graham.
Athletics.—Richard Tuwei, a little-known Kenyan soldier, beat Tanzania’s 1500 m world recordholder, Filbert Bayi, in a meeting between Kenya and Tanzania. Tuwei won in a slow time of 3min 42.35ec.
