N.Z. firm signs fishing deal

p a Auckland A New Zealand fishing company has signed a SI6M joint-venture” agreement with a South Korean firm.

The agreement, between Southern Fisheries, Ltd, of Invercargill, and the Silla Trading Company of Korea, was signed in Seoul.

It has the blessing of the South Korean Government, but has yet to be approved by the New Zealand Government. The deal was set up by the New Zealand External Trade Organisation, a private concern established late last year to promote the interests of New Zealand companies overseas. The chairman of the organisation (Mr G. C. J. Murdoch) said it was hoped the deal would be given approval by the Government next month.

The plan involved the construction of processing and cool store facilities near Invercargill — at a cost of between S2M and S3M — and the expansion of overseas markets for New Zealand-processed fish.
