20 locomotives ordered
PA Wellington Ten more diesel locomotives had been ordered from General Motors in Canada for main-line freight trains, the Acting Minister of Railways (Mr McCready) said. He said that 10 1500 h.p. locomotives were ordered late last year and that contract had now been extended for another 10 engines, taking the value of the order,
including spares, to more than SI6M. “These new locomotives, to be classified as DF, will be of the most modern design and will substantially improve freight handling capacity.” Mr McCready said the first deliveries of the original order were expected to arrive in New Zealand next year.
