Nighties in demand
About 400 items, including four Victorian nightgowns, were offered for sale at an antique auction at Kaiapoi The auctioneer, Mr R. G. Bell, said that about 150 people attended, and that most lots were sold. An oil painting by an English landscape artist, E. J. Niemann, fetched the day’s highest price. $1250. A hand-carved ivory figure sold for $750, and a Royal Worcester jardiniere for $950. Four Victorian nightgownsproved popular, selling for about $3O each. “People seem to collect things like Victorian underwear,” said Mr Bell.
The average price at the auction, which lasted almost six hours, was about $4O an item, he said. Other items sold included furniture, books, jewellery, ceramics, brass, copper, and rugs.
