Canty easily wins table tennis
Canterbury was not extended by South Canterbury when the two provinces clashed in the annual Barrow Shield table tennis competition in the Selwyn Street Hall on Saturday. The competition has been going for 40 years and for one South Canterbury competitor, it was a memorable Barrow Shield challenge. In 1938, Frank O’Gorman contested the inaugural Shield match, winning one of his singles. On Saturday, 40 years later, he won both of his singles matches to add another chapter to a remarkable career. Linwood’s Michael Hamel enjoyed a successful day of table tennis, beating Tim Underdown, 21-16, 21-14; in his first singles match and later accounting for Barry Butler, 21-12, 21-14. Christine Kehoe was also on form, beating Kay Stewart, 21-10, 21-10, and then accounting for the top South Canterbury woman. Gill Underdown, 21-5, 21-19.
