‘Bureaucrats’ blamed

“A few bureaucrats in Wellington” seemed to be responsible for continually delaying a start on building of the Christchurch Airport’s new international arrivals terminal, said the Mayor (Mr H. G. Hay) last evening. The public utilities chairman (Cr M. R. Carter) said the list of minor variations required by the Ministry of Transport was behind the latest delay.

Cr Mollie Clark said the Government was not even a sleeping partner in the airport any more, "It is just a lot of dead wood. It has taken Cm the role of lord and master.” Mr Hav said the constant delay was “just costing everybody more money, let alone inconveniencing the travelling public.” The council had hoped to call for tenders in June.
