Secrecy inquiry
PA Wellington The Government has established a committee to consider the classification of information held by the Government, departments, and agencies. The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) said that the decision was made after receiving the report of the former Chief Ombudsman, Sir Guy Powles. The committee will be headed by Sir Alan Danks, formerly chairman of the University Grants Committee. Professor K. Keith, dean of the law faculty at Victoria University of Wellington, will also be a member. Other members will be from the State Services Commission, the Prime
Minister’s Department, and the Ministries of Defence and Foreign Affairs. Mr Muldoon said that the committee would have the right to seek views from other departments and agencies. It would also invite submissions in writing from any groups or persons who might be interested. Submissions should be sent to the State Services Commission. “The committee will report on the problems of freedom of information ranging from the security of highly secret documents, the availability of information of general public interest, and will include a review of the operation of the Official Secrets Act,” Mr Muldoon said.
