Paterson muffs 17th
With two holes remaining, the Canterbury under-21 golf championship at Harewood yesterday was developing into an intriguing battle between the defending champion, Mark Street, and Brent Paterson.
But a disastrous six on the short par-3 seventeenth by Paterson ended his prospects and Street, the Harewood No. 1, retained his title with a 36-hole aggregate of 144 — the same winning score as last year.
The juniors played the new course in the morning and switched to the old
course for the afternoon. Street and Paterson made their breaks on the new course with superb rounds of 69 and 70, respectively. Street, the 1976 Harewood senior club champion and a one-handicapper, had four birdies on the first fiine to turn in 33 — three under par. His only error on the back nine was a one-over on the short thirteenth.
Paterson, also a one-handi* capper and a member of Coringa’s Woodward Cup team, was only one shot behind Street at the turn and both covered the second nine in
36. Paterson had four birdies in his round but dropped shots on three holes. The same pair dominated proceedings in the afternoon Leading scores.— Under 21 144—M. E. Street, 69, 75. 147— B. G.
