K.O. win to Moore
Paul Moore, a powerfullybuilt Samoan from the Woolston Working Men’s Club, showed impressive punching power when he
knocked out Brent Wilkinson (New Brighton R.S.A.) in the third round of their fight in the Canterbury Boxing Association tournament at the Caledonian Hall yesterday afternoon. The fight, before an almost capacity audience, was even until the decisive blows, with the relaxed and
mobile Moore finding it difficult to score against the solid and over-tense Wilkinson.
Moore eventually found his range and dropped Wilkinson with a well-timed right-cross punch to the jaw at the end of round two. Early in round three, Moore repeated the blow and the referee (Mr M. V. Drury) called a halt to the fight after nineteen seconds.
Trevor Reece (Barry’s Gym) started well in his bout against John Michelle
(W.W.M.C.), scoring often with straight lefts to the jaw. Michelle fought back ferociously and at the end of ! round one Reece was bleed-
ing from the nose. Michelle was dominant early in the second round, scoring with several hard rips to the solar-plexus and right-hand punches to the jaw. Reece tightened his defence, causing Michelle to miss occasionally, and the round was even. Reece attacked first at the
start of round three, and had Michelle back-pedalling rapidly in the face of a splendid jabbing, straight-
left. Michelle steadied and took the fight back to Reece with vigorous two-handed attacks, scoring enough points to give him a unanimous but narrow win. Carl March (Crichton Cobbers) in the first round of his bout with Ross Steel (Barrys Gym) was outfought
and "outpointed. In round jtwo March, after advice 'from veteran trainer Kevin
Dawson, improved markedly, scoring well with an effective and punishing right-cross punch to Steel’s jaw. Steel was still ahead on points at the start of round three and in spite of being shaken by some of March’s splendid right-hand punches scored enough points to gain a unanimous points win.
In a non-stop, toe-to-toe, battle Mark Le Breton (Barrys Gym) narrowly beat Clive Bishop (N.8.R.5.A.). Other results were:
Lance Ash (C.C.C.) beat Peter Sheehan (W.W.M.C.), Gary Buick (Barrys Gym) beat Wayne Jones (N.8.R.5.A.), Craig Sutherland (N.8.R.5.A.) beat Terry Anderson (Fidows), Steven Cole (Temuka) beat Nicky Barbara (Barrys Gym), Alan West (Barrys Gym) beat Ross Nixon (Westport), Brent Davies (N.8.R.5.A.) beat Aukilani Toomalatai (Barrys Gym), John Phillips (W.W.M.C.) beat Jack Tawhare (Papanui).
