Energy sources

Sir, — In replying to Tony Kunowski’s excellent article on New Zealand’s energy future, Jeffrey Sole (April 11) mirrors the excessive optimism of many post-war energy specialists. The nuclear power proponents of the 1950 s spoke of electricity from nuclear power stations that would be too cheap to meter. The costs are now prohibitive and rising fast. In the 1960 s the vast tar sand and oil shale deposits in North America were seen as the answer to dwindling oil reserves. However, technical and environmental problems may combine to make recov= ery impracticable on a large scale. To base New Zealand’s future transport system on the large-scale, economic production of alcohol from waste wood (as suggested by your correspondent) might be as foolish as the current obsession with petroleu i. — Yours, etc., R. F. BROWNE. April 12, 1978.
