Lyttelton cargo sinks with ship

More than 300 tonnes of' Lyttelton cargo went down with the stricken Greek freighter Maira off the Western Australian coast on Monday — along with several thousands tonnes of general cargo from other New Zealand ports. The Maira, an almost new 10.000-tonne vessel, sailed from Lyttelton bound for the Arabian Gulf on March 14 with 1450 bales of South Island wool and 60 tonnes of seed and carpet from Christchurch. Details of the Maira’s fate are still sketchy, but it is understood that she suffered an engine-room fire before turning on her side in rough seas about 180 km off the coast of Western Australia. The 28 passengers and crew were rescued by a Norwegian freighter, the Team Augwi. She managed to pick up the survivors about midday on Monday, an hour before the Maira sank. The Maira was the fifth ship to call at Lyttelton on a new sendee to the Arabian Gulf run by the Gulf Shipping Company. The New Zealand shipping co-ordinator for Bums Philp and Company, local agents for Gulf Shippin (Captain R. Setchel!) said yesterday that the sinking would have no effect on the monthly service. •We have a ship due in Lyttelton on April 26, and a replacement for the Maira should arrive three weeks J after that," he said. It is understood that most : of the cargo was, paid for before being ship- . ped out. so most of the insurance claims will be j lodged by the consignees at ‘ the various Gulf ports. ;
