Athens protest
NZPA-Reuter Athens Several thousand Athenians have attended a rally to protest against anti-ter-rorism legislation being debated in Parliament.
The entire Athens police force, backed by armoured cars, guarded side streets around Athens University in the city centre where the rally was held. The bill, tabled by the Government, provides for the death sentence for acts of terrorism in which a per-
son is killed, and includes life jail terms for kidnapping and hijacking.
It came up for discussion in Parliament after Government concern over increasing kidnappings and political violence in Europe, including a spate of bomb explosions in Athens and its suburbs.
Opposition parties claim the bill is aimed at curbing civil rights and muzzling opponents of the Government, and have said they will vote against it in Parliament.
