Police fire at irate farmers

NZPA-Reuter Madras For the third day running the police have opened fire on rioting farmers in the southern India state of Tamil Nadu demanding reduced land taxes and easier finance terms. An official spokesman said one person was killed when the police opened fire on rioters 120 km west of Madras. At least seven persons have been killed, and more than 400 arrested in the sixi day-old agitation by farmlers which has spread to four districts in Tamil Nadu.

On Sunday the army was alerted after five persons died in police fire in a village about 450 km south-west of Madras, the state capital, and yesterday troops were called into the town of Dindigual, 300 km south-west of Madras. A wave of unrest has swept India in the last few weeks in which at least 28 people have died. Last week the army was called out in Hyderabad, capital of the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, to quell rioting in which 12 died.
