Anzac Day on a Tuesday
Sir, — Casting aside the perennial arguments over the wisdom of Anzac Dav. let us consider the stupidity of a public holiday on a Tuesday. The majority of New Zealanders are unlikely to participate in the solemnity of the occasion in any way. The big question is just what will they do with this spare day? Probably there will be a lot of absenteeism from work on the preceding Monday. Alert employers have anticipated this problem and have offered staff longer working hours so that they can close on Monday. This gives the staff a four day week-end. Schools should not have been closed on Easter Tuesday; most of the parents were working that day. This bonus day could have been transferred to Monday, April 24. More sensibly, surely Anzac Day should be observed (if at all), on the nearest Monday. Even the Queen does not mind when we observe her birthday. — Yours, etc., R. J. BRIGHTLING. April 11, 1978.
