League manager out
The manager of a junior rugby league team has been relieved of his duties for the remainder of the season and a premier grade coach has been banned from the Show Grounds for eight weeks as a result of incidents on the last two week-ends. Mr Harry Anglem, the manager of the Kaiapoi 17years side, will no longer be able to fulfil that role.
He was alleged to have moved onto the field and struck an opposing player during his team’s fixture with Hornby at Witham Park on the first day of competition football, April 1. The sentence was imposed by the Canterbury Rugby League board of control at Its meeting last evening after evidence from officials of both clubs had been heard in committee.
Linwood’s premier squad will not have the services of its coach, Mr Russell Ward, on match days for the next eight rounds. He appeared before the board of control to answer a charge that he harrassed a gate keeper when refused admittance to the league’s official car parking area
before Linwood’.s game against Marist-Western Suburbs last Saturday. Each club is issued with one car parking pass and it is customary for it to be used by the team manager so that he can transport the team’s equipment. Mr Ward will be able to continue in his role as Linwood’s coach at training runs, but he cannot attend football at the Show Grounds until after the tenth round of the premiership on Queen’s Birthday week-end. He said after hearing of the board’s decision that he would have discussions with club officials and players about lodging an appeal. Two players sent from the field last Satur'day were suspended. Mark Broadhurst will miss Marist’s fixtures against Eastern Suburbs and Papanui on the evenings of April 19 and 26 after being stood down for fighting. Broadhurst will be allowed to represent Canterbury against Wellington at Wellington on Anzac Day—suspensions apply only to the level of rugby league in which the [ordering off occurred. i A member of the Halswell
' 19-years side was stood down for three matches for using a dangerous tackle on a Linwood player on Saturday. The referees’ delegate to the board of control (Mr Don Wilson) said that, in addition to the two dismissals, eight other players spent periods in the “chilly-bin” in grades above 17-years on Saturday. One Papanui senior first grade player had his second spell in the “chilly-bin” in two weeks. Mr Jim Anderson, the board’s chairman, passed on Mr Wilson’s remarks to delegates from all clubs after they arrived for their monthly meeting with the board.
